Dr. Alexander Thomas

Dr. Alexander Thomas [M.S. Orth (CMC Vellore), M.Phil. (BITS Pilani), PGDMLE (NLSIU Bangalore)] is a Founder Member and the Executive Director of the Association of Healthcare Providers of India (AHPI), President of the Association of National Board Accredited Institutions (ANBAI), President of the Consortium of Accredited Healthcare Organisations (CAHO) and Consultant to the World Bank. He is on the Boards of NABH, the National Technical Committee for Setting Standards for the Clinical Establishment Act, the Health Sector Skills Council, the Task Force on the Skills Gap in Healthcare, the FICCI Committee on Health Insurance Fraud and the India Backbone Implementation Network (IBIN). The main focus of IBIN has been Elder Care in India, and in his role as Chairman of the Committee, Dr. Alex has led a group of experts to develop a collaborative document on elder care titled Aspirations of the Elderly in India, which highlights priority areas for intervention. Along with the IMA President, Dr. Thomas co-chairs two National Steering Committees: one of the review of the PCPNDT Act and the other on capping compensation for medical negligence lawsuits. He was instrumental in rolling back the service tax for the health sector, decreasing the electricity tariffs for hospitals in Karnataka, and making assaults on doctors a non-bailable offence. Awarded the NBE Emeritus Teacher Award (2014), he is also Professor of Orthopaedics (Management Science University, Malaysia) and his publications include the Handbook of Healthcare Quality, and Communicate.
